P. W. ZHAO

A FIELD GUIDE TO QUANTUM MATTER

Order. Disorder.
Possibility.

I’m Pengwei Zhao, working on theoretical condensed matter physics at HKUST. I explore topology, disorder, and the collective behavior of frustrated quantum magnets.

FIG. 001 / HARPER–HOFSTADTER|C| = 2
BERRY CURVATURE · Φ/Φ₀ = 2/5
A calculated Harper–Hofstadter lowest-band texture. The torus angles are magnetic Bloch momenta u=5kx and v=ky. Color and outward surface relief share a monotone compressed scale for Berry-curvature magnitude. The data come from a 256 by 256 momentum grid; the Chern number is independently checked by the curvature integral and gauge-invariant lattice links. The torus embedding, metallic illumination, and curvature-height scale are artistic choices.

ANDERSON TRANSITIONS / BERRY PHASES

How topology changes localization.

I study Anderson transitions in chiral symmetry classes and the role of Berry phases and topological defects. My work connects localization phenomena to vortex physics, nonlinear sigma models, and dual descriptions of superconductors.

ABOUT

PENGWEI ZHAO / 赵鹏威

Curiosity is
a good starting point.

I work on theoretical condensed matter physics in the Department of Physics at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

My research focuses on topology and disorder, quantum spin liquids, and correlated quantum matter.
